The above photo, like that used in the book, comes from the collection of Ray Funk; we’re not sure of the provenance. There are other photos on the web of McBurnie/La Belle Rosette, most taken by Black-Culture Vulture Carl Van Vechten when McBurnie was appearing at the Village Vanguard and in Louise Crane’s “Coffee Concerts” over the summer of 1941.  Unfortunately, restrictive usage conditions claimed by the Van Vechten estate make it difficult to reproduce those images here without courting trouble.  But we can provide links, at least, where you can look (and download!) for yourself:
